It is easy to find that power system, refrigeration system and manual operation are the most common factors leading to data center failure.
Wiring aging
Wire aging caused fire, commonly seen in old data centers, Korean SK data center fire is due to the fire in the wire. The main cause of line failure is Oldness + Hotness.
Oldness: The insulation layer of the wire has a normal service life in 10 ~ 20 years. Once it gets aging, it may cause damage, and the insulation performance declines. When encountering liquid or high humidity, it is easy to cause short-circuit and fire.
Hotness: According to Joule's law, heat is produced when a load current passes through a wire. Data Center is operated 24 hours with long-term high-load operation of power cable, the high temperature will accelerate the aging of cable insulation, even broken down.
UPS/battery failure
The Telstra UK Data Centre Fire and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications data center fire were caused by battery failure.
The main causes of battery/UPS failure in data center are excessive cyclic discharge, loose connection, high temperature, high float/low float charging voltage, etc. . Lead-acid battery life is generally 5 years, lithium-ion battery life in 10 years or so, with the increase of battery life, its performance declines, and failure rate also increases. The oversight of maintenance and inspection may lead to serious consequences due to not replacing the expiring battery in time.
And because of the large number of data center batteries, series and parallel use, once a battery failure causes the fire and explosion, it will spread to cause a major disaster. The risk of Lithium battery explosion is higher than lead-acid batteries, and the fire-fighting will be more difficult. For example, the 2021 explosion at the Xihongmen energy storage power station in Fengtai District, Beijing, was caused by an internal short circuit fault in the lithium iron phosphate battery, which caused the thermal failure of the battery to catch fire and spread, and then exploded in the event of an electrical spark. This is the main source of concern in lithium-ion battery applications in recent years.
Refrigeration failure
Whether the refrigeration failure or low refrigeration efficiency is caused by compressor, safety valve or water shutdown, it will cause the room temperature rise, affecting the performance of equipment, if not treated in time, the room temperature continues to rise, or due to overheated outage, it causes service interruption, hardware damage and data loss.
